The Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies (ACCMS) is a research and development hub dedicated to advancing cutting-edge “information infrastructures” (hardware and networks) and “information media” (data, content, and information analytics infrastructures). The Center not only applies the outcomes of this research to enhance the educational and research environments within the university, but also promotes joint utilization and collaborative research with scholars from universities and research institutions nationwide in its capacity as a “Joint Usage/Research Center.” Furthermore, in close coordination with the Institute for Information Management and Communication and the Information Management and Communication Department, the Center significantly contributes to the sophistication of IT services across the entire university.

Research and development at the Center is driven by a five-department structure comprising the Department of Networking Research, the Department of Computing Research, the Department of Social Informatics Analytics Infrastructure Research, the Department of Digital Content Research, and the Collaborative Research Laboratories. Faculty members in each research department participate in the university’s education in various capacities, such as cooperating with affiliated graduate schools and offering university-wide general education courses, thereby contributing to the cultivation of the next generation of students. Additionally, they actively engage in joint research with private enterprises and other research institutions, as well as the societal implementation of their findings.

Moreover, the Center is accredited as a core member of the “Joint Usage/Research Center for Interdisciplinary Large-scale Information Infrastructures” (JHPCN), which consists of the information technology centers of eight universities nationwide. Transcending university boundaries, the Center operates supercomputer systems and edge computing infrastructures accessible to researchers across the country. By providing such state-of-the-art computational resources and advanced technical support, the Center broadly underpins the resolution of complex scientific challenges and the generation of novel insights.

Furthermore, the Center not only improves the utility of computational resources within the university but also actively pursues collaboration with the industrial sector. Through joint research and proof-of-concept experiments, the Center promptly returns research outcomes to society, demonstrating leadership toward the realization of a data-driven society.
