講演題目： Measuring the Invisible: Large-Scale Empirical Studies of Nation-State Internet Censorship
講演概要：
The Internet is often imagined as a single, unified global network. In reality, its behavior, however, varies dramatically depending on where you access it from. In this talk, I will present a series of large-scale empirical measurement studies that shed light on how nation-states reshape the Internet through censorship. I will discuss GFWatch and GFWeb, our longitudinal measurement platforms capable of testing hundreds of millions to over a billion domains to uncover DNS, HTTP, and HTTPS censorship by China's Great Firewall, as well as IRBlock, a novel multi-protocol measurement system designed to study Iran's Internet censorship infrastructure at scale. A common thread across these works is the development of measurement techniques that exploit unique behaviors of censorship middleboxes, such as bidirectional filtering and TCP non-compliance, to conduct large-scale studies entirely from outside the censored country, without relying on in-country volunteers or vantage points. I will also discuss the broader implications of our findings for privacy-enhancing technologies, censorship circumvention, and the measurement community, as well as open research questions and opportunities for collaboration.
